Ellen’s Stardust Diner – Where the waiters sing and tater tots are a staple

Our last morning in New York and we do something I can’t imagine a local would ever do. We visit Ellen’s Stardust Diner near Time Square.

The concept itself is highly touristy, and also feels classically New York. The waiters are also Broadway trained performers who take breaks from their waitering to belt out a tune and then materialise next to our table with a perky ‘Now what can I get y’all?!’ It’s undoubtedly cheesy, but the place has a good atmosphere and watching the performers take their turn behind the mic is rather fun.

One thing is to be sure; you don’t visit Stardust for the food. It’s edible, but nothing transcendental beyond that. I order an omelette which is well, omeletty? It comes with tater tots which I have a nostalgic affection for, so they make things a bit more interesting. My dad orders the rainbow bagel, the sight of which gives me mild food rage (you can read about my pathological dislike for rainbow bagels HERE) but that is also served with tater tots which calms my nerves somewhat. Mum’s burger looks dry and a little unappealing. She eats the burger patty, leaves the bun and eats up the waffle fries which like the tater tots, come in to save the day.

I’ve probably had better food at McDonald’s, which I guess is saying something, but all in all it was an experience. The singers were talented, and it’s good exposure for them. It is New York after all, a city of dreams. Who knows who might be waiting for them in the next booth.
